4. You are not a God who takes pleasure in evil; with you the wicked cannot dwell.
5. The arrogant cannot stand in your presence; you hate all who do wrong.
6. You destroy those who tell lies; bloodthirsty and deceitful men the LORD abhors.
7. But I, by your great mercy, will come into your house; in reverence will I bow down toward your holy temple.
8. Lead me, O LORD, in your righteousness because of my enemies-- make straight your way before me.
9. Not a word from their mouth can be trusted; their heart is filled with destruction. Their throat is an open grave; with their tongue they speak deceit.
10. Declare them guilty, O God! Let their intrigues be their downfall. Banish them for their many sins, for they have rebelled against you.
11. But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you.
12. For surely, O LORD, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a shield.

When you are lonely
Psalm 23

1. The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
2. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,
3. he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
5. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6. When I felt secure, I said, "I will never be shaken."
7. O LORD, when you favored me, you made my mountain stand firm; but when you hid your face, I was dismayed.
8. To you, O LORD, I called; to the Lord I cried for mercy:
9. "What gain is there in my destruction, in my going down into the pit? Will the dust praise you? Will it proclaim your faithfulness?
10. Hear, O LORD, and be merciful to me; O LORD, be my help."
11. You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy,

4. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer.
5. Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD"-- and you forgave the guilt of my sin.

15. But their swords will pierce their own hearts, and their bows will be broken.
16. Better the little that the righteous have than the wealth of many wicked;
17. for the power of the wicked will be broken, but the LORD upholds the righteous.
18. The days of the blameless are known to the LORD, and their inheritance will endure forever.
19. In times of disaster they will not wither; in days of famine they will enjoy plenty.

4. I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.
5. For you have heard my vows, O God; you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.
6. Increase the days of the king's life, his years for many generations.
7. May he be enthroned in God's presence forever; appoint your love and faithfulness to protect him.
8. Then will I ever sing praise to your name and fulfill my vows day after day.

When you need strength
Psalm 62

1. My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him.
2. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.
3. How long will you assault a man? Would all of you throw him down-- this leaning wall, this tottering fence?

5. Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him.
6. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.

12. and that you, O Lord, are loving. Surely you will reward each person according to what he has done.

When you need money

18. Praise be to the LORD God, the God of Israel, who alone does marvelous deeds.

20. This concludes the prayers of David son of Jesse.

When you are deeply troubled
Psalm 77

1. I cried out to God for help; I cried out to God to hear me.
2. When I was in distress, I sought the Lord; at night I stretched out untiring hands and my soul refused to be comforted.
3. I remembered you, O God, and I groaned; I mused, and my spirit grew faint.
4. You kept my eyes from closing; I was too troubled to speak.
5. I thought about the former days, the years of long ago;
6. I remembered my songs in the night. My heart mused and my spirit inquired:
7. "Will the Lord reject forever? Will he never show his favor again?
8. Has his unfailing love vanished forever? Has his promise failed for all time?
9. Has God forgotten to be merciful? Has he in anger withheld his compassion?"
10. Then I thought, "To this I will appeal: the years of the right hand of the Most High."
11. I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.
12. I will meditate on all your works and consider all your mighty deeds.
13. Your ways, O God, are holy. What god is so great as our God?
14. You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples.
15. With your mighty arm you redeemed your people, the descendants of Jacob and Joseph.
16. The waters saw you, O God, the waters saw you and writhed; the very depths were convulsed.
17. The clouds poured down water, the skies resounded with thunder; your arrows flashed back and forth.
18. Your thunder was heard in the whirlwind, your lightning lit up the world; the earth trembled and quaked.
19. Your path led through the sea, your way through the mighty waters, though your footprints were not seen.
20. You led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

When you wonder about life's meaning
Psalm 90

1. Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations.
2. Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
3. You turn men back to dust, saying, "Return to dust, O sons of men."
4. For a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night.
5. You sweep men away in the sleep of death; they are like the new grass of the morning--
6. though in the morning it springs up new, by evening it is dry and withered.
7. We are consumed by your anger and terrified by your indignation.
8. You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence.
9. All our days pass away under your wrath; we finish our years with a moan.
10. The length of our days is seventy years-- or eighty, if we have the strength; yet their span is but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away.
11. Who knows the power of your anger? For your wrath is as great as the fear that is due you.
12. Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
13. Relent, O LORD! How long will it be? Have compassion on your servants.
14. Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.
15. Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen trouble.
16. May your deeds be shown to your servants, your splendor to their children.
17. May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us-- yes, establish the work of our hands.

If you are tempted to disobey God
Psalm 95

1. Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.
2. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song.
3. For the LORD is the great God, the great King above all gods.
4. In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him.
5. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.
6. Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker;
7. for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. Today, if you hear his voice,
8. do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah, as you did that day at Massah in the desert,
9. where your fathers tested and tried me, though they had seen what I did.
10. For forty years I was angry with that generation; I said, "They are a people whose hearts go astray, and they have not known my ways."
11. So I declared on oath in my anger, "They shall never enter my rest."

When you need God's mercy
Psalm 103

1. Praise the LORD, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
2. Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits--
3. who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases,
4. who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion,
5. who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.
6. The LORD works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed.
7. He made known his ways to Moses, his deeds to the people of Israel:
8. The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.
9. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever;
10. he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.
11. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him;
12. as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
13. As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him;
14. for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.
15. As for man, his days are like grass, he flourishes like a flower of the field;
16. the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more.
17. But from everlasting to everlasting the LORD's love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children's children--
18. with those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his precepts.
19. The LORD has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all.
20. Praise the LORD, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word.
21. Praise the LORD, all his heavenly hosts, you his servants who do his will.
22. Praise the LORD, all his works everywhere in his dominion. Praise the LORD, O my soul.

1. Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.
2. In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat-- for he grants sleep to those he loves.
3. Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him.
4. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one's youth.
5. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate.

4. Look to my right and see; no one is concerned for me. I have no refuge; no one cares for my life.
5. I cry to you, O LORD; I say, "You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living."
6. Listen to my cry, for I am in desperate need; rescue me from those who pursue me, for they are too strong for me.
7. Set me free from my prison, that I may praise your name. Then the righteous will gather about me because of your goodness to me.

1. O LORD, hear my prayer, listen to my cry for mercy; in your faithfulness and righteousness come to my relief.
2. Do not bring your servant into judgment, for no one living is righteous before you.
3. The enemy pursues me, he crushes me to the ground; he makes me dwell in darkness like those long dead.
4. So my spirit grows faint within me; my heart within me is dismayed.
5. I remember the days of long ago; I meditate on all your works and consider what your hands have done.
6. I spread out my hands to you; my soul thirsts for you like a parched land.
7. Answer me quickly, O LORD; my spirit fails. Do not hide your face from me or I will be like those who go down to the pit.
8. Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.
9. Rescue me from my enemies, O LORD, for I hide myself in you.
10. Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.
11. For your name's sake, O LORD, preserve my life; in your righteousness, bring me out of trouble.
12. In your unfailing love, silence my enemies; destroy all my foes, for I am your servant.

4. praise him with tambourine and dancing, praise him with the strings and flute,
5. praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals.
6. Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD.
